Family Weekend: Snowy Hikes, Sledding Hills & Hot Cocoa Spots (Hudson Valley)

Kids with sleds climbing a snow covered mountain.

Short adventures + warm treats = winter magic. Here’s a parent-tested playbook you can run in any Hudson Valley town—mix and match trails, hills, and cocoa stops by age and weather.

Pick Your Adventure (by age + energy)

Tiny trekkers (strollers & toddlers)

Easy loop: choose paved/packed park loops or rail-trail segments (skip steep grades).

Warm-up: 15–25 mins outside, then straight to cocoa.

Pro move: stash a storybook in the car for a cozy cooldown.

Grade-school crew (bring the sleds)

Hill time: look for wide runs and clear sightlines with parking nearby.

Two-block plan: 30–45 mins sledding → cocoa stop within a 5–10 min drive/walk.

Pro move: rotate glove pairs so one set is always dry.

Teens (views or it didn’t happen)

Scenic payoff: short overlook trails or tower climbs when footing is safe.

Snack run: cocoa + something salty—pretzel, fries, or ramen.

Pro move: make them trail captains—put them in charge of the map and timing.

North to South: 5 ready-made mini-itineraries (verified)

Rhinebeck

•Easy loop: Drayton Grant Park at Burger Hill (short hill walk; huge views). Also a beloved sledding spot when it snows.

•Sledding hill: Same hill works great post-storm; bring a second glove set for the trudge back up.

•Cocoa stop: Bread Alone – Rhinebeck Cafe or Samuel’s Sweet Shop (both serve hot chocolate).

Beacon

•Easy loop: Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park (paved/packed riverfront; stroller-friendly segments) or Madam Brett Park (boardwalk & falls lookout).

•Sledding hill: Head 15–20 mins north to Bowdoin Park—designated sledding hill with river views when conditions allow.

•Cocoa stop: The Chocolate Studio (known for over-the-top hot cocoa) or Bank Square Coffeehouse.

Poughkeepsie / Highland (Walkway area)

•Easy loop: Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park (flat, paved, stroller-friendly; out-and-back as long or short as you like).

•Sledding hill: Short drive to Bowdoin Park for a proper hill when snow hits.

•Cocoa stop: The Poughkeepsie Grind and Cafe (hot chocolate on the menu) or Scandinavian-style sweets at FIKA & HYGGE.

New Paltz

•Easy loop: Mohonk Preserve carriage roads—wide, level carriage roads make winter walking straightforward; pick a short out-and-back.

•Sledding/tubing: For a guaranteed thrill, go 25–30 mins to the Orange County Snow Tubing & Winter Sports Park at Thomas Bull Memorial Park (groomed lanes; cable lifts; check conditions).

•Cocoa stop: Mudd Puddle Coffee Roasters & Cafe (house hot cocoa; in Water Street Market).

Coffee Roasters & Cafe

Wappingers Falls / Dutchess south

•Easy loop: Wetland lookouts and gentle paths at the riverfront sections of county parks; pair with the drive-to sledding hill below for a quick combo.

•Sledding hill: Bowdoin Park (official sledding hill; hay-bale safety set-up when open).

•Cocoa stop: Choose any Main Street café in Wappingers or loop back to Beacon’s The Chocolate Studio if you want the marshmallow showstopper.

Packing List (parent-tested)

Hand warmers (tuck one in each mitten, outside the liner).

Extra socks (wool blend) + spare gloves in zip bags.

Thermos with cocoa or broth.

Blanket for car/train + trash bag for wet gear.

Mini towel for dogs + seat covers.

Safety & Trail Etiquette

Daylight check: plan to be back at car 30 minutes before sunset.

Offline maps: save your loop in case reception drops.

Footing: if you’re sliding, shorten the loop; roads > roots in freeze-thaw.

Meet-up point: pick a landmark in case phones die.

Sledding sense: walk up edges, not the run; spotters at the bottom.
